A controversy has erupted over youth empowerment program in Upper Bong to the extent that the Ministry of Youth and Sports launched an investigation into the allegations.
Alonso Killenjor, the Upper Bong Youth, and Sports Program Officer, reportedly appeared at number six on a shortlist of grant applicants released by the Ministry in recent time.
The listing identified the applicant as female, despite Killenjor being male, a discrepancy that has raised questions about the accuracy of the information submitted, and the process used to compile, and verify the list.
The controversy is particularly sensitive, “because the Small-Scale Grant Program intends to provide opportunities to young Liberians, including support for innovative business ideas, youth-led enterprises, and community-based economic activities.”
Youth and Sports Minister Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah said, her office received a complaint through a Facebook post alleging that a staff member at the Upper Bong Youth Center had included his name among submissions for the county grant program.
Kruah said, the allegation was serious, and warranted an investigation to establish what actually occurred.
For that, her office has commissioned a probe, and will take appropriate action if the allegations are substantiated.
“This is uncompromising,” Kruah said, emphasizing that Ministry employees are expected to demonstrate integrity when handling programs, plans and opportunities intended for young Liberians.”
The controversy now puts a spotlight on the internal controls governing the grant program, including how applications are received, verified, shortlisted, and approved.
