US Envoy Hails Gov’t Fight Against corruption
The U.S. Ambassador accredited near Monrovia; Mark Toner has lauded the Government of Liberia for exerting more efforts in the fight against corruption. Speaking during a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Information Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) on August 19, 2024, the U.S. Diplomat emphasized that President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. and his cabinet has been very forward and upfront with their diplomatic counterparts in a more transparent way in addressing some of the crimes in the past. “I am very positive and optimistic and looking forward to seeing how we can support those efforts,” the Ambassador Toner stressed. For his part, the Minister of Information Jerolinmek M. Piah disclosed that the meeting with the U.S. Ambassador was centered on a wide range of information, which include the fight against corruption, and the question of accountability especially the war crimes court, among others. He added that the overall economic situation was discussed, citing that the U.S. Ambassador is keen on how the country could attract more investors to enhance job creation across the country which according to him, is fundamental to maintaining peace, security and stability. Minister Piah pointed out that the U.S. Ambassador mentioned a concern that most people who applied for the U.S visa don’t return when given the visa most especially those who were granted tourist visas. He revealed that the U.S. Envoy highlighted the need for something to be done because it affects anyone who has the intention to go to the U.S tomorrow. Minister Piah also pointed out that the visa suspension is due to a change of company that is responsible for the visa production, citing that due to the period of transition individuals who have applied cannot be issued the current visa because it cannot be used anymore.
