Speaker Koon, LRRRC Management Discuss Legal Framework

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, over the weekend, Paid a working visit to the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), where he held discussions with the Commission’s management on issues surrounding migration, refugee protection, repatriation, and the strengthening of the institution’s legal framework.

During the visit, LRRRC Management called on Speaker’s Koon to support efforts aimed at the passage of the new LRRRC Act, which is expected to strengthen the Commission’s mandate and enhance its capacity to effectively address emerging migration and displacement challenges in Liberia.

The Management emphasized that the passage of the new Act would provide a stronger legal foundation for the Commission, clarify its responsibilities, and enable it to better coordinate Liberia’s response to refugee affairs, returnees, internally displaced persons, and other migration-related issues.

The LRRRC leadership expressed appreciation to Speaker Koon for taking time to visit the Commission and engage with its management. They stressed that legislative support remains critical to ensuring that the Commission is adequately empowered to carry out its national responsibilities.

Speaker Koon, for his part, acknowledged the importance of the LRRRC’s work and the need for stronger institutional support to address migration and refugee-related concerns.

The engagement is seen as an important step toward strengthening collaboration between the Legislature and the LRRRC, particularly as Liberia continues efforts to improve its migration governance and protection mechanisms.

The LRRRC Management also expressed hope that the Speaker’s intervention would contribute to advancing the new Act through the legislative process and ultimately its passage into law.
