Rep. Cole Resigns From NPP
A prominent member of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), J. Marvin Cole, has resigned from the party, citing unlawful suspension and a breakdown in leadership that, according to him, fails to uphold the rule of law. In a resignation letter addressed to the party’s standard bearer, Jewel Howard-Taylor, and national chairman, George Sylvester Mulbah, Cole expressed frustration over the party’s handling of his suspension. The representative of District #3 in Bong County emphasized that the suspension violated NPP’s Constitution and By-laws, denying him a fair hearing. He also condemned what he termed an “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional” action, which he claimed had been orchestrated by some members of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). Cole, who has been with the NPP since 1997, made it clear that his resignation came after careful consultations with his family, friends, and political allies. In his letter, he acknowledged the support he had received from the party, including the chance to contest and win two legislative terms on its ticket. However, he stressed that the failure of the party leadership to defend the rule of law and the Constitution left him with no other option. “THE LAW IS THE LAW,” Cole wrote, emphasizing his commitment to justice and constitutional governance. He also expressed gratitude to the people of District #3, Bong County, for their continued support, stating that his decision was ultimately driven by a desire to protect the welfare of the Liberian people. Cole’s resignation seems to have sent shockwaves through the political landscape in Liberia, especially as the country faces a critical moment in its legislative affairs. It remains to be seen how this move will impact the NPP, a key player in the ruling coalition, as well as the broader political dynamics leading up to upcoming elections. As Cole departs the NPP, the spotlight now turns to the party’s internal leadership struggles and the potential ramifications for the Coalition for Democratic Change’s unity in the coming months.
