Rape Court Sentences Two Men By: Yassah J Wright
Criminal Court “E” Judge Serena F. Garlawolu has adjudged two men identified as Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole guilty for the crime of gang rape. However, Judge Garlawolu sentenced Diamond G. Doe for fifteen (15) and Luke Pole twelve (12) years imprisonment respectively as deterrence for the would-be law breakers. On the 8th day of July, 2024, this court ruled and adjudged the two defendants guilty for the crime of Gang Rape in keeping with the New Penal code of Liberia and postponed the sentencing of the defendants. In the same vain, the court requested the probation to conduct a presentence division of the Ministry of Justice Serena to conduct a presentence investigation of defendants Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole within their Community were they resided prior to the commission of the offense and file their findings or reports within three working days with the court. The reports were filed with the court on the 18th day of July, 2024. For the benefit of the Parties litigants, the court calls or orders the Clerk of this court to read the reports in open court before its final judgment on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
The Clerk having read the presentence reports of defendants Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole, the court than entered its final Judgment. “In view of the facts and circumstances, having adjudged defendants Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole Guilty for the crime of Gang Rape, hereby sentences Defendants Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole to fifteen (15) and Twelve (12) years’ imprisonment respectively as deterrence for the would-be law breakers,” stated Serena F. Garlawolu, Resident Circuit Judge, Criminal Court “E”. The Judge noted that those who forsake the law praise the wicked but such as keep the law contend with them and understand justice. She averred further, “therefore, let us be our Neighbors keepers to maintain peace and dignity of man, whether for poor or rich. The system should not relent to fight against crimes.” Judge Garlawolu however remanded defendants Diamond G. Doe and Luke Pole to the Monrovia Central Prison or any prison facility within the Country to serve their term of imprisonment. As to the ruling of the sentencing, one of counsels for the defendants announce an appeal to the Honorable Supreme Court during it October A.D. 2024 Term. The Court granted the Appeal as a matter of law. Meanwhile, during the start of the court trial, devotion was conducted and thereafter the role of the clerical and those absent were duly noted and the minutes of the previous day sitting was ordered read, corrected and adopted to form part of the current sitting of the court
