Opposition Parties Sign MOU To Protect Their Votes By: Joseph Kerkula (FTV’s Roving Reporter
Over sixteen Opposition Political Parties on Monday, August 28, 2023 signed a memorandum of understanding aimed to protect and safeguard citizens’ votes in the October 10, 2023 presidential and Legislative elections.
The signing ceremony which was held in Monrovia brought together major opposition political leaders in an effort to protect and safeguard their votes.
At the Singing of the MOU on behalf of their individual political parties were Alexander Cummings,(CPP) Sara Beslowe Nyanti,(ALL) Tainwon Gongloe, (LPP) Luther Tarpeh, (UP) Madila Cooper (MOL), among others.
Giving an overview of the entire process, the Standard bearer of the African Liberation League Sarah Bestlow Nyanti who is also the lead organizer of the MOU; said it is prudent for the opposition to unite and protect their votes in the interest of the country and its people.
The ALL political Leader stressed the need for the establishment of a joint training of poll watchers, building the capacity of an independent poll watching team, ensure united opposition at polling stations, ensure that there is cooperation to support opposition candidates where parties do not have candidates.
She also highlighted the establishment of an independent war room that will receives votes from polling centers across the country including the development of software that will track elections results electronically.
Madam Nyanti maintained that the establishment of a joint secretariat will ensure drafting of an agreements Independently will track, documents and report violence against opposition and ensure a dossier with evidence.
For his part, the Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Patties Alexander Cummings stated the opposition parties will ensure the presidential results reflect the will of the Liberian people.
He noted that it is the ultimate responsibility of President George Weah to ensure the elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.
The Opposition political parties have agreed to organize joint activities geared towards ensuring that there is cooperation and engagement that ensures the protection of every votes cast; whereas consenting parties agreed that all efforts will be made to ensure that more opposition parties join the initiative.
Meanwhile, they reaffirmed their commitment to the Farmington Declaration; the willing opposition parties herein agreed to use their platform as a means of documenting their joint position.
