Ngafuan Calls For Expedited Completion Of New Redemption Hospital
Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan has urged for the swift completion and opening of the New Redemption Hospital located in Caldwell, Montserrado County.
This appeal was made during a recent tour of the facility attended by officials from the Ministries of Finance and Health, alongside project managers and contractors.
Initiated in 2016 as part of Liberia’s post-Ebola recovery efforts, Minister Ngafuan emphasized that the purpose of the visit was not to assign blame but to facilitate the timely completion of the project.
He reiterated that the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) is committed to supporting all sectors in achieving their objectives, particularly those within the ARREST sectors.
Highlighting continued support for the project, Minister Ngafuan mentioned the World Bank’s ongoing interest, specifically noting World Bank Vice President Ousmane Diagana’s commitment to overseeing the hospital since its inception. Mr. Diagana is anticipated to visit Liberia in September to further discuss the project’s progress.
Minister Ngafuan encouraged the project team to transparently address remaining challenges to ensure that the impending deadlines are met effectively.
In earlier comments, Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto disclosed that construction of the hospital is approximately 92 percent complete. Dr. Kpoto outlined that outstanding tasks include the testing and commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems, installation of steel doors, final finishes, cleaning, and pedestrian access improvements. She projected that civil works would be finalized by November 30, with full contract clearance aimed for December 31, 2026.
Dr. Kpoto also noted that contracts for the hospital’s general equipment have been secured, with the Ministry of Health having made a 20 percent advance payment. However, she emphasized that the hospital’s opening will also depend on the installation of medical equipment, staffing, training, development of operational guidelines, and public awareness initiatives.
Consultants have recommended a phased opening, enabling a systematic transfer of services from the old Redemption Hospital to the new facility to ensure clarity and continuity for patients.
Additionally, assessments conducted in July by the New Redemption Hospital Project Managers revealed that the access road to the facility is currently 52 percent complete. Once operational, the New Redemption Hospital will enhance healthcare services, particularly for maternal and newborn care. Health authorities have indicated that recruitment for the project is actively ongoing.
