New Transport Fares Launched

In an effort to alleviate the high transport fares Liberians face on a daily basis, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Transport has officially launched new transportation fares for people commuting across Montserrado County and its environs. Accordingly, the new transportation fares which take immediate effect, cover taxi, bus and keke, aimed at enabling Liberians to freely commute across Monrovia with less financial burden. Making the disclosure at the launch Wednesday, July 31, 2024 in Monrovia, Transport Minister, Sirleaf Tyler, said given a circular from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Liberia Petroleum Refining Corporation (LPRC) on the pump price of petroleum products (gasoline at US$4.18/LD$810.92 and fuel oil at US$4.71/LD$913.74) respectively, the Division of Research and Statistics at the MOT immediately convened  sectorial meetings with all stakeholders. He noted that in line with the directive, the Division held several consultative technical meetings in the later part of June 2024, with various road transport unions and other stakeholders, including the Liberia National Police (LNP), aimed at finding a common ground. “In those meetings, the technical committee agreed and finalized the new fare listings for Montserrado County in the categories of taxi, bus and keke, while motorcycle being covered only in central Monrovia,” he said. Minister Tyler indicated that the committee took into account, the pump price of petroleum, distance covered in kilometer/mile, road condition (good or bad), the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) exchange rate (high or low) as well as category of vehicle spare parts. According to him, any commercial driver caught overcharging passengers outside of the government approved fares will be penalized accordingly. He therefore advised commuters and the general public to report any violation to the Ministry or the police, including any MOT inspector, stressing that the cooperation of the public is highly solicited and welcomed in said endeavor. “Penalty for would- be violators include US$100 to US$200 for taxi and keke, and US$200 to US$400 for bus to be paid into the central revenue account at the CBL within twenty-four hours of the violation,” he said. Accordingly, the fares are subject to adjustment consistent with change in the price of petroleum products on the local market. The launch of the new transportation fares brought together scores of officials from the Ministry of Commerce, FRTUL, ETUL, M-FOMTUL, NAFOMTAL, LUDO as well as WADU.   The approved government price in taxi from Broad Street to ELWA Junction is L$150 and Red light is L$200, while bus is L$100, and any stop along the way is L$50, among others.  Previous Fares (LRD) Arbitrary Fares (LRD) Proposed/Approved (LRD) Distance Time (Minutes)
