NEC Gets New Chair
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has named the new chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
The nomination of Jonathan K. Weedor. Follows the resignation of Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah from the post.
According to a release, Weedor brings to the position a wealth of experience in electoral administration, governance, and public service.
He previously served as commissioner of NEC from 2004 to 2020, during which time, he held positions that included human resources, finance, and procurement.
Weedor also served as Acting co-chairman of the Commission, contributing significantly to the management and credibility of the electoral processes.
In addition to his national service, Mr. Weedor has participated in numerous international electoral missions and engagements across Africa.
They include assignments with electoral bodies in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, as well as observation and assessment missions under the auspices of the African Union and ECOWAS.
Mr. Weedor holds a Masters of Arts Degree with Honors in Development Studies, with a concentration in Development Management, from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States of America.
He also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.
His nomination is pending confirmation by the Senate.
In the maintime, Pres. Boakai has directed that Mr. Weedor serves as Acting chairman of the Commission until the Senate reconvenes from its current recess.
Boakai meanwhile, expressed full confidence in Mr. Weedor’s competence, integrity, and professionalism, and expects that under his leadership, NEC will continue to uphold the principles of transparency, independence, and credibility in the conduct of any future elections.
