MOJ Strengthens Prosecutors’ Capacity By: Yassah J Wright
The Department of Prosecution at the Ministry of Justice has embarked on an intensive three-day capacity strengthening symposium for attorneys and prosecutors from the fifteen counties of Liberia aims at strategizing to combat crimes and prosecute criminals. The three-day workshop which runs from February 4-6 covered topic such an overview of the New Drug Law, Financial Crimes, Case Management, importance of forensic death investigation and reform of coroner system and trial preparation among others. The updated curriculum covers cutting-edge issues and emphasizes practical strategies for successful prosecution in today’s court. Speaking in an interview with journalists Wednesday, February 5, 2024, Liberia’s Solicitor General Cllr. Augustine C. Fayiah expressed appreciation to Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswarld Tweh for the supporting, while describing the Minister as someone who is passionate about creating an investment friendly environment. According to him, the initiative or training will ensure prosecutors are regularly equipped with the knowledge and tools to navigate complex cases, address new challenges and uphold justice in an ever-changing environment. He disclosed that the referral training is an initiative that started some years back under the leadership of Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, one of his predecessors with the goal of equipping prosecutors to avoid reversal and failure in legal matter, especially case trial. ‘’This is a training that started years past to strengthen the capacity of county attorneys across the country to enable them properly handle cases. Since this government took over, this is the fourth training that we have conducted. in this manner, I want to extoll the Minister of Justice for his support and oversight, especially his goal of creating an investment friendly climate were all Liberian and residents can live peacefully and happily with the laws respected’’ he added. The Liberian Chief Prosecutor stated that they want to empower prosecutors in a manner where they will not point fingers at alleged criminals, rather used empirical facts and evidence to prosecute criminals, adding that from the initial interaction, the fruit of the training is good. Commenting on prosecutors robust posture and winning of cases across the country, he said that since their ascendency, the department has been doing well and prosecution has been wining cases and the most notable is Original Japan, a Nigerian Drug dealer who was found guilty by Criminal Court ‘’C’’ ‘’there are challenges but to admit, because we have a Minister that is passionate about prosecution, we are addressing them one at a time. Currently, for a long while, all of our prosecutors are having cars, I mean mobility to move around and prosecute. Now, we are doing this refresal training to enhance their understanding on up to date laws and so, with those, I think we are addressing those challenges in a more robust but chronological manner’’ he pointed out.
