Government has begun distributing science laboratory equipment valued at approximately US$1 million to schools as part of efforts to strengthen science education in public high schools.

Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah said, the equipment is to establish, and improve science laboratories in various public high schools, provides students with better opportunities for practical learning.

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education, and create a more effective learning environment for students.

Dr. Jallah also highlighted government’s ‘free tuition,’ and registration policy. She described the exercise as a direct, and measurable intervention to increase enrollment, attendance, and retention from Kindergarten through Grade Six.

Dr. Jallah made the disclosure in Monrovia at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Tuesday, August 11.

She urged parents to take advantage of the policy, “because the registration at public primary schools is free.”

“Parents no longer need to pay money to register a child, simply, take the child to any public school and give that child information to the registrar.”

Dr. Jallah also outlined the enforcement mechanism for the “Free Primary School Registration Policy,” and the government’s Digitized School Operational Permit System.

She said, the two reforms are designed to make primary education genuinely accessible while improving oversight of schools.

Dr. Jallah disclosed how additional 1,000 teachers are expected to be placed on the government payroll to help schools accommodate increased enrollment resulting from the “free registration policy.”
