The Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Mohammed Ali, has come under growing public scrutiny.

Ali woe deepened after he defended claims that nearly 76 percent of Liberians have access to safe drinking water.

While on a local radio talk program in Monrovia, Ali said, the statistics were drawn from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program, which monitors global access to drinking water and sanitation services.

The figure, he said, reflects national data collected from various improved water sources throughout the country.

Mr. Ali made the clarification when Representative Musa Hassan Bility mounted he concerns.

Bility has reportedly requested that Ali appear before the House of Representatives to explain the methodology used to arrive at the controversial figure.

Many citizens and lawmakers, have questioned whether the statistics truly reflect the daily realities faced by ordinary Liberians.

Ali argued that the 76 percent figure does not refer solely to pipe-borne water supplied by the corporation, but also includes boreholes, protected wells, rural hand pumps, rainwater harvesting systems, and other improved water sources being used in communities nationwide.

Despite defending the statistics, Ali admitted that several Liberians, particularly those living in rural communities, and densely populated urban settlements, still struggle to access clean and safe drinking water on a daily basis.

He acknowledged that challenges remain in expanding water infrastructure across the country.
