The Liberia National Police (LNP) has observed instances of the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, badges, and related identifiers, including in online content and public displays.

The LNP reminds the public that police uniforms and insignia are official symbols of lawful authority and public trust.

Therefore, their unauthorized use may create public confusion, undermine confidence in law enforcement institutions, and facilitate unlawful conduct to include impersonation.

The LNP further draws attention to Section 22.98 of the Police Act and Regulations, which prohibits any person, without the written authorization of the Inspector General, from wearing, displaying, assuming, or using the uniform, badge, insignia, designation, or appearance of a police officer, or from falsely presenting himself or herself as a member of the Liberia National Police.

The LNP said, the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or related police identifiers constitutes a violation of the law, and may result in criminal liability.

It warned that individuals, who impersonate as police officers or falsely claim such authority not only violate the law, but also jeopardize public safety and erode trust in legitimate law enforcement operations.

Accordingly, LNP said, it will investigate all credible reports of unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, badges, or related police accoutrements and will take appropriate enforcement action where sufficient legal grounds exist.

The LNP urges content creators, entertainers, event organizers, businesses, and members of the public to refrain from the unauthorized use of police uniforms and police-related identifiers without the requisite authorization from the IG.

Members of the public meanwhile, have been encouraged to report suspected cases of police impersonation or unauthorized use of police uniforms and insignia to the nearest police station or through official LNP reporting channels.

The Liberia National Police said, it remains committed to safeguard public trust, preserve the integrity of its institution, and ensure compliance with the laws.
