The Liberia National Police (LNP) has arrested and is investigating Inspector David S. Fayiah for the death of a 19-year-old man identified as Mr. Monoba Mohammed. Inspector Fayiah is undergoing investigation for fatally shooting Mr. Mohammed around the Banjor Gas Station, in Brewerville, outside Monrovia, on Saturday, August 3, 2024. Police Inspector General Gregory O. Coleman said on Sunday, August 4, 2024, during a press conference held at the LNP headquarters, that Inspector Fayiah is currently in police custody at the LNP’s headquarters in Monrovia over the death of Mr. Mohammed. “Last night I received a call at 9:15, about the incident that occurred around the Banjor Gas Station in Brewerville, of an officer identified as Inspector David S. Fayiah’s involvement in a shooting incident while off duty”, IG Coleman said. Inspector General Coleman termed the shooting as senseless, adding that the LNP is commencing a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. “The killing was senseless, very baseless, it doesn’t make sense at all, you are an officer you should take insults because you were built for that, you are expected to maintain horrendous crime even in the face of dangerous scorn and ridicule, I am troubled, he could be my child, relative and on the overall he is a Liberian our utmost duty is to protect life not to take life,” IG Coleman stressed.

According to IG Coleman, the LNP preliminary probe has proven that there was a confrontation between Inspector Fayiah and Mr. Mohammed that resulted in the discharge of the officer’s personal firearm, adding that the officer is not a firearm carrier at the LNP. He, at the same time, disclosed that Mr. Mohammed sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead. IG Coleman further said that the police’s quest for accountability and transparency in the delivery of law enforcement service is key, adding that the weapon was retrieved from inspector Fayiah. It is not a government registered firearm and it has initiated a whole different investigation as to how it entered the country. He also asserted that there is a lot of illegal weapons that entered the country over the last years, indicating that it is the police duty to ensure that they are retrieved from the streets, adding that measures have been put in place for people to bring them to the police but before that can happen they will start to aggressively pursue people who are carrying illegal weapons including officers. “As investigation is ongoing, we can assure you the public that we are going to keep updating you on issues as they unfold and not to keep you assuming, one of our major priorities is to ensure that justice is served and all actions will be conducted in accordance with the law,” IG Coleman added. Meanwhile, the police boss extended his sympathy to the family of the deceased and assured the public that the LNP is committed to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
