The people of the Kplio Traditional Community in Grand Kru County, have petitioned the Legislature to create three additional chiefdoms.

The creation of the new chiefdoms are in a bid to strengthen local governance and ensure full community representation.

The residents, through their Representative Gbadee Nyeswa, on Monday, October 6, 2025, presented their position statement to Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, Chairperson of the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus.

The petition calls for the legislative establishment of Gbalakpo, Flenneken, and Suehn Marquanken Chiefdoms in the Kplio region.

Representative Nyeswa explained that the current structure, placing the entire Kplio community under a single chiefdom, has become a challenge for effective governance due to rapid population growth, and the formation of new towns and villages.

The community now comprises 35 towns with an estimated population of 18,000 residents.

In the petition, each of the proposed chiefdoms will consist of three clans to include Gorteken, Gbuken-Jlankloh, Jufuken, Big Flenneken, Wutuken-Jaquiken, Joeplohken and Filoriken.

Kplio elders believed that establishing the new chiefdoms will enhance administrative efficiency, promote fairness and peace, and contribute significantly to projects in the county.

The petition, signed by elders, women, and youth representatives, described the move as both a short-term and long-term solution to governance constraints.

“When our petition is given due consideration, it will improve local governance, strengthen productivity and safety, and promote peace and development,” the statement read.

Sen. Bartekwa, who received the petition on behalf of the Legislature, expressed gratitude to Kplio citizens for their “organized approach” in presenting their concerns through the proper legislative channels. He commended the community for their civic engagement, and reaffirmed that the petition would be forwarded to the county Legislative Caucus, and subsequently to both chambers of the Legislature for consideration. “Your position statement will receive the attention it deserves. As long as it aligns with the laws and governance procedures; the Legislature will give it the respect, and consideration it merits,” Bartekwa assured.

Residents of Kplio pledged their continuous cooperation with the caucus. They also expressed optimism that their request would mark a new chapter in effective governance and development.
