Justice Minister Commits Liberia To Peace Building At UN Security Council
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Liberia, Cllr. Oswald Tweh, has committed Liberia to Peace Building and Sustaining International Peace at the United Nations Security Council’s 9710 Meeting in New York, United States of America. The Attorney General outlined the country’s peacebuilding initiatives and future plans, stating that Liberia’s peace building priorities remained clear: To address the root causes of conflict; ensure justice for victims; and create an environment where all Liberians, especially the youths can thrive in a peaceful and stable society. According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice issued August 28, 2024, the Minister further emphasized that in alignment with the Government of Liberia’s effort to sustaining peace, the President of Liberia, Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., issued Executive Order Number 131 on May 2, 2024, creating the office for the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court. He disclosed that the office is charged with developing the necessary framework for a Special War Crimes Court to prosecute individuals responsible for the most egregious crimes committed during Liberia’s civil war. “The establishment of this court is not just a legal imperative, but a moral one. It represents Liberia’s commitment to ending the cycle of immunity that has undermined justice in Liberia for too long. By holding perpetrators accountable, Liberia aims to deliver justice to the victims and their families and to send a clear message that such atrocities will never again be tolerated in our Nation”, the Attorney General stated. Additionally, Cllr. Tweh informed the Peacebuilding Commission that “Justice alone is not enough; citing that it must be accompanied by efforts to heal and rebuild our communities. As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommended, the Government of Liberia is also committed to establishing a Reparation Trust Fund to support conflict victims”. He further revealed that said fund will help victims rebuild their lives and communities, ensuring that they are not forgotten as we move forward. The Justice Minister concluded by thanking the UN Peacebuilding Fund Office in Liberia, while expressing renewed hope in continued collaboration for the stability of peace in Liberia and its overall contribution to world peace.
