The founder and executive director of the Jeff Dekegai Juaquellie Foundation, Jeff Dekegai Juaquellie, has renewed calls for the government to move beyond public appeals, and aggressively enforce the traffic laws.
Juaquellie believes that the persistent rise in road crashes is a clear indication that existing traffic regulations are not being effectively enforced.
He said, the stronger enforcement; not repeated warnings; is the missing link in the fight against reckless driving, and preventable road fatalities.
Juaquellie call came as road accidents continue to claim lives, and leave others injured.
He urged the government to prioritize practical investments that would strengthen the capacity of traffic officers to monitor, and enforce road safety regulations instead of being concern with how drivers and shake the officers’ hands.
Rather than purchasing additional luxury vehicles for the police, Juaquellie suggested that authorities acquire patrol vehicles equipped with speed-monitoring technology capable of detecting motorists that would violate speed limits.
He said, such equipment would enable law enforcement officers to identify speeding drivers, issue citations, and ensure that offenders are held accountable under the law.
He argued that the certainty of punishment would discourage reckless driving, reduce dangerous overtaking, and encourage motorists to respect traffic regulations.
Juaquellie: Many drivers continue to ignore traffic laws, because they believe, there is little chance of being caught, or penalized.”
He said, a visible, and consistent law enforcement presence on the highways, and major roads would significantly improve driver behavior, and reduce the number of avoidable accidents.
He further noted that strict enforcement of traffic laws would not only save lives, but also strengthen respect for the rule of law.
In addition, Juaquellie suggested that lawful traffic fines collected from offenders could generate revenue for government while reinforcing accountability on the roads.
He also called for expanded public education campaigns to complement law enforcement efforts.
