The Secretary General of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Koijee, has condemned what he describes as a threat to the life of the party’s political leader, George Manneh Weah, following a significant police presence at the CDC headquarters on Monday morning, August 5, 2024. Koijee’s statement came during a press briefing held at the party’s headquarters, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the Liberia National Police (LNP) for stationing officers around the building.  The appearance of the police coincided with rumors of a planned CDC protest against the government, which the LNP acknowledged in a Sunday press conference, referring to alleged “witch-hunts” against CDC supporters. Addressing the media, Koijee stressed that the CDC has always been transparent about its activities, including any planned protests, and would not act in secrecy. He voiced concerns over the timing and location of the police deployment, noting that it coincided with the time when their political leader typically arrives at the party headquarters.  According to him, this presence constitutes a potential threat to Weah’s safety. Koijee called for an explanation from the authorities regarding the police deployment, emphasizing the need for respect towards political parties and their leaders.
