A violent confrontation recently erupted inside a Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) detention facility in Forquelleh Town, Panta District, Bong County.
The situation left a resident hospitalized, and two LDEA officers injured, triggering public concern, and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident.
A resident, identified as Reuben Naimah, is receiving medical treatment at the Forquelleh Clinic after he sustained injuries during the confrontation. Two LDEA officers, deputy commander, Emmanuel Coker, and officer Abraham Zota, also reportedly suffered injuries when they attempted to detain him. The incident originated from an alleged dispute during the July 26 Independence Day celebrations at an entertainment center known as “Place to Be.”
Eyewitnesses said, Reuben became involved in an altercation with another individual (not named); a situation, which reportedly prompted a complaint to the LDEA, “because there were no Liberia National Police (LNP) officers stationed in the town.
Following the complaint, LDEA officers reportedly arrested Reuben, and conducted a preliminary assessment, after which they decided to place him in temporary detention pending further action. However, the situation reportedly escalated when officers attempted to place him inside a holding cell while he remained handcuffed. Eyewitnesses claimed Reuben refused to enter the cell unless the handcuffs were removed, leading to a heated confrontation between him, and the officers. The disagreement quickly developed into a physical struggle, involved three LDEA officers. One account alleged that Reuben sustained injuries during the altercation, and eventually lost consciousness before he was rushed to the Forquelleh Clinic for emergency medical treatment. The violent encounter also left deputy commander, Emmanuel Coker, and officer Abraham Zota, with reported injuries. The incident has generated widespread discussion across Forquelleh, with residents demanding a transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Community members say, the findings should establish whether established arrest, and detention procedures were followed, and determine responsibility for the injuries sustained by all parties involved. The LDEA Bong County Detachment has confirmed that it is aware of the incident, and says, an official statement will be issued following its internal investigation. As authorities continue to gather facts, the confrontation has intensified public debate over law enforcement practices, and the handling of detainees in remote communities where police presence is limited.
Residents are meanwhile, waiting for outcome of the investigation with the hope that it will provide accountability, restore public confidence, and prevent similar incidents in the future.
