The Unity Party- led government fight against corruption appears to be very aggressive especially with the latest indictments brought forth against four former top officials of government. According to InfoQuest Liberia, the move by the government is timely and welcoming. The Think-Tank non for-profit organization said the stand taken by the government is not just a good sign in the right direction but a practical action that needs to be commended. However, InfoQuest Liberia believes that said action is a drop in the bucket as more needs to be done to ensure that the fight against corruption is taken very seriously from all ends. “This is just the beginning and we need not to be complacent because, corruption cases have not gone anywhere despite the Monday’s indictments and arrests respectively, ” Mr. Matthias Yeanay, Executive Director of InfoQuest Liberia re-emphasized. He used the occasion to encourage the government to muster the courage to do more and not to be intimidated especially when they are doing the right thing. “Let the fight against corruption be holistic, let the law take its course avoid of external interferences. InfoQuest, at the same time, called on the government to make the fight against corruption holistic emphasizing that it should start from former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s administration. Mr. Yeanay also warned the public from depoliticizing the fight against corruption for the betterment of the society. According to him, the ordinary people normally feel the pinch of corruption as such, it is time that they work collectively with the government and relevant agencies of government in order to battle corruption in the public space. In a wake of robustly fighting corruption in the public space, the Unity Party- led government on Monday July 29, 2024 drew initial charges against four past senior officials of government to include: Samuel D. Tweah Jr. former Finance Minister, Stanley S. Ford, former Director of the Financial Intelligent Unit, Jefferson Karmoh, former National Security Advisor, and Nyanti Tuan, former acting justice Minister and others for allegedly stealing and converting into their personal use the amount of L$1,055,145,040.00 and US$500,000.00. According to a writ issued by the Monrovia City Court, stated that these funds were allegedly withdrawn shortly after the transfers without any documentation which among other things disclosed their intended use or disbursement terming it as unlawful, wicked, and intentional, and a direct violation of the New Penal Law of Liberia.
