Huge Quantity Of Drugs Unearthed

 𝐀side the US$19.2 million worth of drugs seized at the airport on June 8, a𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 huge d𝐫𝐮𝐠 b𝐮𝐬𝐭 was unearthed on Tuesday, July 21.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 said, the suspected n𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 was discovered 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲, a proximity of Roberts International Airport (RIA); now a venue of drugs transit in recent days.

On the sideline, it was reported that revolver pistols of 45 rounds were also exposed in the bags, which contained the cocaine.

Security forces said, they uncovered the major suspected drug shipment in Douazohn, Margibi County, raising fresh concerns about the fight against international drug trafficking in the country.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, has meanwhile, confirmed at a government’s regular press brief that Tuesday discovery was the “largest drugs arrested in the country so far history is concerned.”

Piah described the latest discovery as what could become the “largest drug seizure in Liberia’s history.”

He acknowledged how officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), in collaboration with other national security agencies, discovered a “massive quantity of suspected narcotics during a security operation in Douazohn.”

“The operation was based on intelligent tip-off,” a source said via mobile phone call.

Piah said, preliminary assessments indicate the substance is believed to be cocaine, “but laboratory analysis and further investigations are still underway to confirm its identity, determine the exact quantity, and establish its estimated street value.”

He meanwhile, praised the LDEA and other security institutions for their “coordinated efforts,” saying: “The operation reflects the government’s determination to crack down on drug trafficking, and prevent Liberia from becoming a transit point for illicit drugs.”

He stressed the need for security agencies to remain vigilant, and continue intelligence-driven operations to dismantle drug trafficking networks across the country.

Mr. Piah added that investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the full scope of the seizure and identify all individuals connected to the suspected drug shipment, but Colombian and Spanish nationals have been arrested in the raid that led to the discovery.

The latest discovery comes amid heightened anti-drug enforcement efforts following the recent US$19.2 million drug bust at RIA, a situation which signaled an intensified campaign against narcotics trafficking.
