HoR Probes Health Minister, LDEA Director
The House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Health and National Security to probe the Minister of Health and the Director of Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency on the National Response Plans adapted by the Multisector Committee in combating drug and substance abuse across the 73 Electoral Districts of Liberia. Pleanry’s decision on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 during its 12th Day Sitting of the first Quarter was triggered by a communication from Sinoe County Electoral District 2 Representative, Samson Wiah. Rep. Wiah stated in his communication to Plenary that almost 30 days ago, precisely on the 22nd of January 2024, President Joseph Nyuma Boikai declared drug and substance abuse a Public Health Emergency and subsequently commissioned a multisector committee headed by the Health Minister and to date, Liberians still see the issue of drug and substance abuse on an alarming increase and the proliferation of drug intoxication associated deaths everywhere around the country. “Honorable Speaker, considering the exigency nature of drugs and substance abuse, I would like to crave the indulgence of plenary to invite the Minister of Health, Head of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia and the Director of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency to come and inform us about a National Response Plans adapted by the Multisector committee in combating drug and substance abuse across the 73 Electoral Districts of the Republic of Liberia,” Rep. Wiah communication stated. Following the reading of the Sinoe County lawmaker communication, Plenary voted to mandate its committees on Health and National Security to investigate the matter and report to the Body in a week.
