The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), has introduced irrigation farming in Kpaai District, Bong County.

The move aims to boost food production, empower young people and promote all year-round agricultural activities.

Moses Gbanyan, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Regional Development, Research and Extension made the announcement during a meeting with residents and community stakeholders in the district.

Gbanyan said, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize the agricultural sector, and provide young people with practical opportunities to engage in productive farming.

He said, irrigation farming has the potential to transform agriculture in Kpaai by reducing farmers’ dependence on seasonal rainfall and enabling continuous crop cultivation throughout the year.

The Ministry, Gbanyan said, is committed to introduce innovative agricultural practices that can increase productivity, strengthen food security, and improve the living conditions of rural communities. He said, under the planned irrigation system, farmers will be able to grow crops during both the rainy and dry seasons, creating a more reliable and sustainable agricultural environment. Such an approach, he said, will increase harvests, expand income-generating opportunities, and contribute to national efforts to reduce food shortages.

“Agriculture is moving toward practical decisions and modern approaches that will ensure crops are grown in the rainy and dry seasons.”

Gbanyan stressed the need for young people to take advantage of the opportunities emerging within the agricultural sector.

He meanwhile, encouraged them to acquire modern farming skills, and view agriculture not merely as subsistence work, but as a pathway to entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

Residents welcomed the announcement, describing irrigation farming as a potentially transformative initiative capable of increasing agricultural output and create employment opportunities in the district.

If successfully implemented, the project is expected to position Kpaai District as a growing agricultural hub while supporting efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency, rural development, and sustainable economic growth through modern farming practices.
