The Commander- In -Chief of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), Emmanuel D. Gonquoi, has declared that he will be on the ballot in Liberia’s 2029 general elections, raising the prospect of a bid for one of the country’s highest political offices.
Gonquoi made the declaration on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during a thank-you program in Kakata, Margibi County, where he acknowledged citizens’ role in maintaining peace during the transition of power.
“My arrival today is even much more presidential. There is no curse on Margibi that we can’t produce a presidential candidate or vice presidential candidate. In 2029, I will be on the ballot,” Gonquoi declared.
Although he did not specify the position he intends to contest, his reference to the presidency and vice-presidency placed the two offices at the centre of his remarks.
The EFFL leader also described himself as politically transformed over the past two years, suggesting that his current standing differs significantly from his earlier position.
“Two years ago, the Emmanuel Gonquoi before is not the same today,” he stated.
Gonquoi’s declaration seems to set the stage for his next political move as Liberia approaches the 2029 elections, with the EFFL leader leaving open whether he intends to seek the presidency or vice-presidency.
