Frustrated Residents Build Emergency Makeshift Floater

Frustration over the prolonged failure to rehabilitate the Chengbetee Bridge has pushed residents of Dorbor District, particularly Finnetoe, to take direct action as the critical crossing continues to disrupt transportation and commerce between Grand Kru and Sinoe Counties.

After more than two years of worsening conditions, community members have mobilized to construct a makeshift floater to provide temporary passage for residents, traders, and other travelers who depend on the route.

The community-led initiative, spearheaded by City Mayor Ophelia Juah Wiah, reflects growing concerns that continued waiting for government intervention is imposing an unacceptable burden on ordinary citizens.

The Chengbetee Bridge serves communities along the Buah Geeken corridor, where residents rely heavily on the route to transport agricultural produce and other commodities. Its deteriorating condition has reportedly increased transportation difficulties and contributed to higher costs for businesses and consumers.

The current situation has also revived questions about an earlier local effort to rehabilitate the bridge.

In 2025, businesspeople and district authorities reportedly mobilized L$1 million toward rehabilitation efforts. However, the initiative was halted after Grand Kru County Development Officer Joe Sekpeh reportedly intervened, citing anticipated government action.

More than a year later, residents say a permanent solution remains elusive.

The makeshift floater is therefore being viewed as an emergency response rather than a replacement for proper infrastructure.

Community leaders have called on the central government to urgently intervene and construct a modern, durable bridge capable of supporting safe transportation and economic activity between Grand Kru and Sinoe Counties.

For residents, the message is clear: they can improvise to survive, but they cannot build the permanent infrastructure their communities deserve.
