Altercation Over Missing Child Case Leads To Suspensions

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has suspended two senior officers at the Pleebo Police Station following a physical confrontation inside the station, an incident that was caught on video and widely shared on social media recently.

The officers suspended are Rebecca Nimely, Commander of the Women and Children Protection Section – WCPS, and Deputy Shift Commander, Mark Wahkeleh.

According to police sources, the altercation occurred on Friday, August 15, 2026 and reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over how to handle a missing-child case that was brought to the station.  A video of the incident, showing a heated argument that escalated, later circulated online and drew public criticism.

Region Five Police Commander Cool Moses Sepoh II confirmed the suspensions and condemned the officers’ actions.  “This conduct is unethical, unprofessional, and does not reflect the standards of the Liberia National Police,” Commander Sepoh said. “We are a disciplined force and we must lead by example, especially when dealing with sensitive cases involving children.”

Both officers were suspended with immediate effect pending investigation. The matter has been formally referred to the LNP Professional Standards Division – PSD in Monrovia for  probe.

In a statement, the LNP said responsibility for the confrontation has not yet been established.

“Appropriate administrative and disciplinary action will follow the investigation, and due process will be observed for all parties involved,” the statement read.

The incident has sparked discussion in Pleebo, with residents and civil society actors calling for calm and for a transparent investigation.

Many expressed concern that internal disputes among officers could undermine public trust, particularly in cases involving women and children.

WCPS handles some of the most sensitive cases in the county, including sexual and gender-based violence and child protection.

 Community members are urging the LNP to ensure that services to victims are not disrupted during the investigation.

The Liberia National Police reiterated its commitment to professionalism and accountability.

Officials said the suspension is intended to preserve the integrity of the investigation and maintain public confidence in the police.

Authority said, the outcome of the PSD investigation will determine any further disciplinary measures.
