From Monrovia To โ€˜Christopolisโ€™

Montserrado County Electoral District #6 Representative, Samuel R. Enders has drafted and begun rallying support among fellow lawmakers for a proposed legislation seeking to rename the capital city from Monrovia to Christopolis.

In a communication addressed to members of the 55th Legislature, Rep. Enders described the proposed legislation as a โ€œhistoric effort to reconnect Liberia with its original identity and historical roots.โ€

The proposed measure is titled: “An Act to Re-Instate Christopolis as the Capitol City of the Liberia in lieu of Monrovia, 2026.”

It seeks to replace the current name of the capital city Monrovia with Christopolis, which Enders argues was the settlement’s earlier name before becoming Monrovia, named in honor Commonwealth Governor, James Monroe.

Endersโ€™ communication stated that the bill aims to address the โ€œlingering effects of colonialism, slavery, and psychological oppression associated with the current name of the capital city.โ€

Monrovia was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, who historically owned slaves. ย For that reason, Enders argued that naming the capital city of Africa’s first independent republic after an individual associated with slavery does not reflect the values and aspirations of a nation founded on freedom and Christian faith.

He said, Liberia was established as a homeland for freed slaves, and recognized as Africa’s first independent black republic. therefore, it should embrace symbols and identities that fully represent African dignity and liberation. Enders emphasized the need for the proposed change to represent “freedom from mental and emotional slavery.”

He said, it would serve as a step to strengthen national identity and historical consciousness.

The proposal has already generated discussions regarding the history, identity and the significance of national symbols.

Supporters may view the initiative as an opportunity to revisit historical narratives and promote cultural identity, while others may raise questions regarding historical interpretation, national tradition, and the practical implications of changing the capital city’s name.

The proposed legislation is expected to undergo the legislative process, including review and debate among members of the House of Representatives and other stakeholders before any final action is taken.
