The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has imposed an administrative fine of US$500,000 on ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) for “environmental violations.”
The amount is to be paid into the government’s Consolidated Account through the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) within ten working days.
Additionally, AML is required to pay US$100,000 to the EPA within the same timeframe.
EPA Executive Director, Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo said, the payment will support ongoing monitoring, sampling, technical research, and assessments necessary to determine the extent, and impacts of the pollution, and to inform appropriate restoration measures.
Yarkpawolo said, payment of the fines does not absolve AML of its ongoing obligations under the Environmental Protection, and Management Law, its environmental permits, or any other applicable laws, and regulations.
Yarkpawolo: “Following further monitoring, and assessments, the Agency may issue an Environmental Restoration Order outlining additional remedial, and restorative measures. Our approach is firm, fair, and consistent. We will acknowledge, and encourage corrective actions when a company responds responsibly, as evidenced by the measures being implemented at AML’s Buchanan facility.
He spoke of how environmental harm is identified, and regulatory obligations are not met.
Yarkpawolo promised that EPA will take decisive action to protect communities, and the environment.
“The action,” he said, “serves as a clear reminder to all industrial, and concession operators to protect the environment, respect the law, comply with their respective permits, and honor the communities in which they operate.”
He assured the public of the Agency’s commitment to constructively engage with concessionaires, but will not compromise the health, safety, and livelihoods of the Liberian people.
