Liberia Cannot Afford to make the struggle for political power more important than the welfare of the citizens.

Power Is Necessary in every democratic society. It gives elected leaders the authority to govern, formulate policies, protect the nation, and improve the lives of citizens. But when the pursuit of power becomes an obsession; when political actors are willing to divide the country; weaken institutions; spread hatred, or obstruct national progress simply to gain, or regain power, democracy loses its true meaning. Liberia Has Paid an enormous price for political power struggles. Our history reminds us that political competition can easily become destructive when ambition overwhelms patriotism.  A Nation That has experienced civil conflict, political instability, poverty, displacement, and the loss of thousands of lives, should have learned that political power is temporary, but the consequences of political irresponsibility can last for generations.

The Presidency Is temporary; the legislature is temporary; political parties are temporary; government positions are temporary, but Liberia is permanent.

This Is Why every political actor, whether in government, or in opposition, must ask a fundamental question: Am I fighting for Liberia, or am I fighting merely for power?

There Is Nothing wrong with an opposition criticizing a government. In fact, responsible opposition is an essential component of democracy. Government must be questioned, scrutinized, challenged, and held accountable. But opposition should not mean opposing everything simply, because it comes from the government.

Likewise, Those In government must understand that winning an election does not give them ownership of the country. They are custodians of public authority, entrusted with the people’s resources, and confidence for a limited period. The Danger Begins when the both sides forget these principles. When government sees every criticism as an enemy attack, democracy suffers. When opposition sees every government achievement as a failure, democracy suffers. When political parties place party interests above national interests, democracy suffers. And when citizens are encouraged to hate one another because they support different political leaders, Liberia suffers. Political Disagreement Should never become national division. Liberians must also reject the dangerous idea that political power is the only pathway to relevance, wealth, dignity, or influence. Public service should not be reduced to a contest over who gets access to state resources.

The Real Contest should be over ideas.

Who can build better roads?

Who can improve education?

Who can strengthen healthcare?

Who can create jobs?

Who can fight corruption?

Who can protect the nation’s resources?

Who can attract investments?

Who can improve agriculture?

Who Can Make the country safer, and more prosperous?

That is the kind of competition Liberia needs.

We should compete over solutions, not destruction.
