Disenchanted UP Partisans Endorse Pre. Weah Re-election Bid
As Liberians get set to go to the poll on tomorrow Tuesday, November 14, 2023 to vote in the much anticipated presidential run-off election between the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Unity Party (UP) scores of disenchanted UP partisans have endorsed the re-election bid of President George Weah. Accordingly, the UP partisans were received over the weekend in Montserrado County electoral District #16 by the Chair of all Chairs of Montserrado County District Development Council, Philip Boye Merchant. Chairman Merchant, who is an influential person and executive of the National Patriotic Party, one of the original constituent parties of ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), is said to have been the brain behind the crossover of the UP members. Delivering the endorsement statement in District 16, Saint Paul Bridge Community, the group through its Chairperson, Madam Patience Cousli outlined several reasons for their move to the CDC. According to her, during the 12 years of the Unity Party in government, the country experienced poor road connectivity; parents could not afford to pay their children school fees, high poverty rate, lack of infrastructure, unimproved education, poor healthcare, security among others. Accordingly, they have observed over the years that under the CDC led-government headed by President George Weah, Liberians have experienced massive development, and they are enjoying improvement in those various sectors. “We have no regret of our action to leave the Unity Party and come over to endorse and support the re-election bid of President George Manneh Weah in the November 14, 2022 presidential runoff election,” Madam Counsli stressed. “Just see what this President has done and is still doing. Our children are no longer paying WASSCE fees, we now have improve, quality and affordable education. Free tuition policy at the University of Liberia and all public colleges across the country. The construction of more community and major roads, hospitals, markets and you just name them.” The disenchanted Unity Party partisans upon crossing over to the CDC, used the occasion to appeal to President Weah Executive Mansion Chief of Protocol, Madam Finda Nora Bundoo to help provide them loan and other economic empowerment, so as to sustain themselves and children while schooling. “Chairman Philip Boye Merchant, we are happy for this gathering but we want you to please reach our message to the President, Papa Gbehkugbeh and Rescue Mother Finda Bundoo, that we want do small businesses, we want loan so we can do something on our own, and we know our father and mother will listen to our cry and help us,” they lamented. Receiving the endorsement statement on behalf of President George Weah, Chairman Merchant termed the group move as wise and a demonstration of patriotism. He noted that although politics is about interest, thousands of qualified electorates are voting the Liberian leader for his second term of the Liberian presidency due to his tangibles in his first term. “Today, I’m standing before you as a direct representation of President Weah. The President has promise to work in your interest and do even more than what you are seeing across the country, but this cannot be achieve if we don’t come together,” he said. The tough talking Montserrado County DDC Boss emphasized that the disenchanted UP members will be condemned and considered as empty headed individuals only because they have pledged their support to President Weah. “Pay the detractors no listening ear. When you are on their side, you are wise and love the country, but once you join the CDC, then they claim that you know nothing. That’s their own low class of understanding and interpreting politics,” he noted.
