The City of Kanweaken, recognized as the commercial hub of River Gee County, is on the verge of achieving a greater developmental milestone as construction of its long-awaited modern City Hall nears completion.

The landmark facility is expected to be officially dedicated and turned over for public use in the coming months.

Located within the GbeapoKanweaken Civil Compound, the new City Hall is poised to become the largest and most modern public hall in River Gee County, providing the city with its first permanent administrative headquarters since attaining city status in the 1990s.

Upon completion, the state-of-the-art facility will serve as a central venue for government operations, municipal administration, public meetings, development forums, conferences, educational programs, cultural celebrations, civic engagements, and other major community activities.

Designed to meet the growing administrative and social needs of Kanweaken, the building will comfortably accommodate more than 700 people at full capacity, making it the county’s largest indoor public gathering facility.

Beyond its impressive seating capacity, the City Hall includes two spacious administrative offices, a welcoming reception and waiting area, a secure storeroom, two large modern restroom facilities, a wide front porch, and several additional amenities designed to improve administrative efficiency and enhance public service delivery.

The ambitious project was officially launched on April 26, 2025, when River Gee County Sen. Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie broke ground for the construction, describing it as a transformative investment in the future of Kanweaken and River Gee County.

With an estimated investment exceeding US$200,000, the City Hall represents one of Senator Sogbie’s flagship infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening local governance, expanding public infrastructure, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable development.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Senator Sogbie stressed that every growing commercial city deserves a modern administrative center capable of effectively serving both government institutions and the public.

He noted that the project symbolizes progress, accountability, and the county’s commitment to modernizing local government institutions while improving access to essential public services.

The under construction Kanweaken City Hall is among several development projects initiated by Senator Sogbie across River Gee County.

Other completed and ongoing initiatives include the Youth Center in Kelipo Kanweaken, the Chedebo Beletiken Town Hall, the Gbeapo Sweaken Town Hall and Youth Center, numerous community town halls, road rehabilitation projects, and the installation of hand pumps to improve access to safe drinking water in rural communities.

The construction of the modern facility was awarded to Real Estate Builders, a Liberian-owned construction company entrusted with delivering the project in accordance with approved engineering and construction standards.

For decades, Kanweaken operated without a City Hall despite its important role as River Gee County’s commercial center.

Successive city administrations relied on school and church facilities to conduct official government business, limiting administrative efficiency and public service delivery.

River Gee County Senator and Chairman of the River Gee County Legislative Caucus, Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie, was elected during the 2020 Special Senatorial Election on the ticket of the Alternative National Congress – ANC, a political party founded by Alexander B. Cummings.

As Liberia prepares for the 2029  General and Presidential Elections, Senator Sogbie is  expected to seek re-election in a bid to retain his seat and continue representing the people of River Gee County in the Liberian Senate.

However, residents and local leaders believe the completion of the City Hall will usher in a new era of effective municipal governance by providing a professional working environment for city officials while creating a modern public space for community engagement and development planning.

Once officially commissioned, the Kanweaken Modern City Hall will stand as one of the public infrastructure achievements in River Gee County, serving as a lasting symbol of progress, good governance, institutional growth, and the continued transformation of Kanweaken into a thriving commercial and administrative center.

To ease the burden on schools during the startup phase, the project also includes one year of free high-speed internet subscription for all beneficiary schools.

Officials said this will guarantee uninterrupted access while the Ministry of Education and county authorities work on long-term sustainability plans.

Massaquoi said the project aligns with President Joseph NyumaBoakai’s digital transformation agenda and the government’s commitment to expanding access to technology in education.

He noted that reliable internet will enable students and teachers to access e-learning platforms, digital libraries, research materials, and online training programs. It will also improve administrative services such as record keeping and communication between schools and the Ministry of Education.

“This investment is about preparing our students for the demands of the digital age. Internet access is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity for learning, innovation, and national development,” Massaquoi added.

Education stakeholders in Maryland and other counties have welcomed the announcement, calling it a timely intervention to bridge the digital infrastructure gap in public schools.

Installation is expected to begin once the Starlink equipment arrives, with priority given to schools that currently have no internet access.
