Bong County has joined the growing debate over the legal situation involving former Vice President, and Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor.
The county Concerned Citizens have meanwhile, rejected calls for a proposed “Dollar Rally” and insisted that her case be handled through the courts rather than political mobilization.
The group says, its position is rooted in due process, fairness, and the rule of law.
They stressed that Howard-Taylor, like any person facing legal proceedings, is entitled to a fair hearing, the presumption of innocence, and the constitutional protections guaranteed to accused persons. Bong Concerned Citizens have backed the Bong County Legislative Caucus’ call for a speedy, transparent, and fair judicial process.
They argued that demanding due process should not be interpreted as an attempt to interfere with the independence of the courts.
Instead, the group says, political leaders, and citizens should allow the judiciary, and Howard-Taylor’s legal team to address the matter through the appropriate legal channels.
The group has particularly criticized the proposed “Dollar Rally,” urging Bong citizens not to participate in activities that could turn a legal matter into a political confrontation.
According to the citizens’ group, legal cases should not be determined by the size of a political crowd, the amount of money raised or the level of public pressure.
They argued that evidence, constitutional safeguards, and judicial procedures must remain at the center of the process. Bong Concerned Citizens have also questioned the organization of the fundraising initiative, claiming that it was launched without adequate consultation with Howard-Taylor, and her legal representatives.
The group says, such initiatives could create confusion over the former vice president’s legal strategy, and potentially distract from the formal judicial process.
Chairman Joehandsome F. Weahweah says, the group is not declaring “Howard-Taylor guilty, or innocent.” Rather, he says, the organization has demanded that her constitutional rights be respected, and that the case be resolved through a transparent legal process.
“Justice, due process, and the rule of law, not political loyalty, financial rallies, or public pressure must guide this matter.”
The citizens have also appealed for calm, urging the public to reject misinformation, inflammatory statements, and actions that could undermine confidence in the legal system.
Their position puts the group at odds with efforts to mobilize financial, and public support around Howard-Taylor, while simultaneously supporting the Legislative Caucus’ demand for due process.
