CDC Debunks UP Claims Over Campaign Meleé

The National Campaign Committee of the Weah-Taylor 2023 has debunked claims made by the Unity Party (UP) over a fracas, indicating that the partisans of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) disrupted its campaign activities near the UP’s campaign office in Airfield Sinkor, Monrovia.

The CDC termed the UP statement as “false claims,” and clarified that the CDC’s ongoing district engagements by its standard-bearer, which were continuing Thursday in Districts 9 and 10 of Montserrado County, had been pre-announced a week ago on media platforms.

The CDC National Campaign Committee said in a statement Thursday that the CDC also communicated its key campaign dates to the National Elections Commission (NEC).

On Thursday, the Unity Party claimed in a statement that while en route to its National Campaign Headquarters as previously planned and scheduled to announce the additional and final campaign team and interact with partisans, supporters and well-wishers, the entourage of the UP Standard Bearer, Amb. Joseph N. Boakai, encountered a massive traffic jam caused by the unexpected and unplanned activities of the CDC.

The UP indicated that partisans and militants of the CDC disrupted activities of UP partisans who had gathered at VAMOMA to welcome their Standard Bearer.

However, the CDC indicated that though it had pre planned campaign activities in Districts 9 and10 and, having realized that the UP was seeking to provoke violence by planning campaign activities on the same day, the CDC then decided to postpone the pre scheduled start of activities in district #9 for more than four hours to avoid any conflict.

According to the CDC, as a consequence of the irresponsible and violent action of the Unity Party, partisans of the CDC were brutalized by Unity Party supporters during the campaign activities on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Weah-Taylor Campaign Committee has called the attention of the National Elections Commission, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the office of the ECOWAS representative and other international partners to the flagrant provocation of the Unity Party and urged their timely intervention to avert the reoccurrence.
