Careyburg City To Get Parboiled Water Soon -Major Urey Reveals By Fiona Benson Kollie
As part of efforts to further improve the living conditions of citizens and reduce sickness associated diseases, the Lord Mayor of Careyburg City, Edwin Menlor Urey has revealed plans of a proposed parboiled water to be constructed soon. Speaking Tuesday in Careyburg City, Montserrado County, when he was honored by a group under the banner- Citizens United For Better Liberia as most Upstanding Mayor Of the Year, Mayor Urey said Careyburg City is one of the oldest cities in Liberia, founded since the 18 century, but he noted that it is yet still undeveloped. He named lack of quality education, good health care and most of all, unsafe drinking water which according him, is impeding the livelihood of the citizenry, maintaining that human resources are key to nation building. Mayor Urey added that it is upon this backdrop that he has decided to construct a safe- drinking water plan worth over One Hundred and Twenty Thousand United States Dollars which according to him, will be the first of its kind for the people of Careyburg City as help to reduce some of the illnesses associated water borne diseases. Major Urey also told the gathering that the Careyburg City which is the seat of the township, as well as the main contributor to providing safe drinking water to Monrovia and its environs but intoned that the township has been left out. Also commenting on the issue of health and education, the Careyburg City Mayor disclosed that the issue of health is also a serious problem, stating that most of the health facilities are being managed by nurses believed to be civil servants who work during the week from Mon- Fri 8:00am-4:00pm. According to him, on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, the facilities are closed which he said poses a serious threat to the lives of citizens; especially during emergency. Speaking on the issue of education, Major Urey also told the gathering that the education sector is also faced with lots of challenges, naming the sustainability of teachers as key factor to maintaining teachers in the classroom, among others. He mentioned that although the city is not included in the national budget, these challenges confronting the city, his leadership is currently working along with the city council to ensure that they are dealt with through funds generated from taxes collected from investment in the township. Major Urey further appealed to Central Government to see reasons and include Careyburg City in budget to buttress their efforts in meeting the needs of the citizens.. Moreover, the Careyburg City Mayor commended the group for the recognition, stating that he didn’t know that his works were being noticed as he at the same time called on other appointees of the Unity Party- led government to also work in the interest of the people for the growth and development of the country. Speaking earlier, the chairman of the group under, Kesseley Barzeh, said it is better to give a man his flowers while he still alive, stressing that it is upon this backdrop that the Citizens United For Better Liberia has decided to honor the Careyburg City Mayor for his numerous contributions to society and the people of Careyburg City. He named the renovation of the city hall, the construction of parking lot for motorcyclists, refurbishment of the public schools, seeking the warfare of the citizens, among others things, which according to him, cannot be overlooked. Mr. Barzeh also called on other appointees to do likewise, stating that if Liberia will be developed, it needs the efforts of every Liberian.
