Hopes for a paved road connecting Grand Kru County to neighboring Maryland have been rekindled. The latest development followed the deployment of a team of engineers to conduct a detailed topographical survey along the Barclayville/Pleebo corridor.
The approximately 75-kilometer road corridor, which residents say, has remained in poor condition for decades, and becomes particularly difficult to traverse during the rainy season, is now undergoing another major engineering survey as government moves toward road development plans for the area.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Bleebo-Trehn District,
Consultant Team Lead, Sambo H. September 19 that the Ministry of Public Works is conducting the month-long exercise to gather engineering data needed for the design of the road.
Taylor said, the survey team is documenting hydraulic features, mature vegetation, existing infrastructure, and other physical features along the corridor.
โThe data his team will submit will be used by a team of engineers as parameters to design the road for the government.โ
He praised the locals for their cooperation, and hospitality since the team’s arrived, saying: โThe difficult road conditions remain the principal challenge.โ
He disclosed how the team has been staying in Behwan for several days, an arrangement he said, was facilitated by the District Development Officer.
Taylor expressed optimism that the completion of the survey would contribute to efforts to finally provide Grand Kru with a paved road connection.
In a related development, the Government of Liberia, through its partnership with the Government of India, has already announced plans for the construction of a 55.2-kilometer paved road along the Barclayville/Sassatown corridor.
For that, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, along with other senior government officials, is expected to travel to Barclayville in October for the groundbreaking ceremony that will mark the commencement of the project.
