Nunch Kerkula, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested by the Liberia National Police (LNP) and currently under investigation after he allegedly stabbed his friend to death following a heated argument. Kerkula was initially apprehended by police officers at the Grand Bassa District #1 station on the day of the incident and was later transferred to the Buchanan Police Headquarters for further investigation. On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Kerkula allegedly fatally stabbed Leroy Wesseh, a man in his early 20s, during an argument at a local cook shop in the Mat House Community, Lloydsville Township, Grand Bassa County. Wesseh was rushed to the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan but was pronounced dead on arrival. During an investigation on Monday, February 24, 2025, Kerkula stated that the argument started when Wesseh allegedly insulted his sister – the owner of the local cook shop. Kerkula explained, that following the death of a woman in their hometown he and others went to the scene to perform a specific task, however, he was informed by his sister through a phone call that Leroy (the deceased) “insulted her because he wanted to buy food, but she didn’t serve him.” Kerkula said that when he returned, he could not find Wesseh at his sister’s shop, but instead at another shop. Kerkula invited Wesseh back to his sister’s shop to resolve the issue and to warn him, but the conversation escalated into a heated argument. Kerkula stated that after exchanging words, Wesseh picked up a stick and approached him as if to fight. In response, Kerkula picked up a knife. “I didn’t mean to stab him,” Kerkula explained. “But when I hugged him, he fell to the ground, and I heard people yelling that I had badly hurt Leroy.” Kerkula emphasized that he and Wesseh had no previous disagreements and were not close friends in the community. He deeply regretted his actions and pleaded for mercy. While Kerkula remains at the Grand Bassa Police Headquarters under investigation, his sister, only identified as Leimu, has been declared a person of interest in the case. LINA
