Sen. Joseph Want USAID-Funded Project Audited
Montserrado County Senator Saah Joseph has urged the Plenary of Liberian Senate to instruct the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to audit USAID fundings from the various ministries and agencies that were implementing USAID-funded programs. Senator Joseph requested the indulgence of the Senate to audit Ministries and Agencies that have benefited fundings from USAID during the period 2018 to 2025. In a communication submitted to President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence on Thursday February 20, 2025, he stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the use of donor funds. The Montserrado County Senator acknowledged the significant contributions of the USAID funds and highlighted that USAID has been a key partner in the Country’s development through financial interventions and technical support to governance, infrastructure, education, health and economics. According to him, the proposed audit is also aimed at assessing the allocation and disbursement of USAID funds, compliance with financial regulations and the effectiveness of funded projects. Senator Joseph added that the audit will at the same time place the Legislature in a better position of understanding, to possibly recall the 2025 Budget or seek a recast of the budget so as to address the funding gaps amidst the cancellation of the USAID funds. Meanwhile, the plenary of the Liberian Senate has mandated its Committee on Public Accounts and Audit to do a comprehensive analysis of the request aimed at having GAC to audit all institutions that have received fundings from USAID.
