Over AGOA Economic Growth Propodsl:

The House of Representatives has invited senior officials of the Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs to appear next Tuesday regarding a proposal aimed at accelerating economic growth.

The decision followed a communication submitted by Montserrado County District #16 Representative, Dixon Wlawlee Seboe, which called for deliberate action toward economic expansion and increased national revenue generation.

In his communication addressed to House Speaker Richard N. Koon, Rep. Seboe said Liberia’s abundant natural resources and questioned the persistence of poverty and unemployment.

He argued that the country’s economic challenges require urgent attention and a coordinated national strategy to maximize benefits from existing natural endowments.

The lawmaker specifically highlighted the importance of leveraging opportunities provided under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, commonly known as AGOA.

According to him, Liberia has yet to fully capitalize on trade and investment opportunities available through the United States market.

He also urged policymakers to engage the nation’s best economic and financial experts in developing practical solutions for sustainable economic transformation.

Members of the House subsequently agreed to invite authorities of the Finance and Foreign Affairs Ministries to provide perspectives on the matter.

The appearance is expected to focus on Liberia’s preparedness to expand exports, attract investment, and strengthen participation under AGOA provisions.

Lawmakers are also expected to examine policy measures needed to improve competitiveness and increase revenue from international trade opportunities.

Rep. Seboe maintained that future generations will judge current leaders by their actions or inactions regarding national economic development.

He stressed that meaningful reforms should transcend political divisions and prioritize the collective interests and prosperity of the Liberian people.

The Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs are expected to appear before the relevant House committee on Tuesday (June 23, 2026).
