In US$19M Drug Seizure:
Authorities Intensify Investigation
Government has called on citizens to exercise patience and allow security authorities to complete their investigation into the recent seizure of narcotics. The seized narcotics valued at approximately US$19 million. Government described the case as a major demonstration of the commitment to combat transnational crime. During a telephone interview on Okay FM, Deputy Information Minister Daniel O. Sando, praised the efforts of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), and other national security institutions for their “swift response” to the high-profile drug interception. Mr. Sando said, security agencies are working diligently to uncover the full details surrounding the case, and ensure that all individuals connected to the illegal shipment are identified and brought to justice through due process. The ongoing investigation, Sando said, reflects government’s determination to strengthen national security, and uphold the rule of law in the face of growing challenges posed by international drug trafficking networks. He also expressed concern over the “circulation of unverified information, and misleading photographs on social media by some opposition figures.” Sando warned that such actions could create confusion, and distract from the professional work investigators have carried out. Though the LDEA has not officially released photographs or passport information relating to the six persons-of-interest reportedly linked to the case, Sando urged the public to rely on verified information from authorized government institutions. Mr. Sando said, prematurely releasing the identities of persons under investigation could undermine the integrity of the process, and potentially affect efforts by law enforcement agencies to gather evidence and establish facts. He further called on the public to give investigators the necessary space, and support to conduct a thorough and credible inquiry. Sando adds: “Government remains committed to ensure transparency while protecting the integrity of the investigation.” He has meanwhile, called for national unity, encouraged Liberians across political lines to avoid rushing to judgment, instead allow the legal process to take its course.” He said, the fight against drug trafficking is a shared national responsibility that requires cooperation from all citizens. Mr. Sando has meanwhile, assured the public that government will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
He also urged Liberians to remain patient and confident in the work of the security institutions as they seek to uncover the truth behind the largest drug seizures in recent history.
