The Government of Liberia has allocated US$1.8 million United States Dollars to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) for the rehabilitation of seven military barracks across the country. Speaking on Monday August 12, 2024, on State Radio, ELBC, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia General Davidson Forleh said it is no secret that the AFL has been challenged over the issue of housing facilities over the years. General Forleh cited that upon this backdrop, the Government of Liberia under the leadership of President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. allocated such amount to rehabilitate seven military barracks in Lofa, Grand Gedeh, Bong, Margibi, Todee in rural Montserrado and Nimba Counties to decongest the Edward Binyah Kesselly Barrack (EBK).

He also stressed that some members of the National Legislature headed by the Chair on Security at the Senate, Momo Cyrus, have visited the Edward Binyah Kesselly Barrack and observed the poor living conditions of the soldiers. “So, if you heard that wives of AFL personnel are protesting it wasn’t a joke; it was the same issues of poor living conditions by the soldiers and things that will boost the morale of the AFL. Although I didn’t support the action, it was totally wrong, but there are serious problems.” He also said to boost the AFL Morale, they are formulating policies to begin the promotion of AFL personnel, and they are working closely with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) to increase their salaries after the promotion. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of Liberia Chief of Staff disclosed that the AFL for the first time has begun the initial saving of US$150 thousands in order to begin paying its retirees’ benefits. Adding that retirees will begin receiving benefits within the next three years. Source: LINA
