Trouble Drapes On Chinese’s Sand Mining
The Chinese sand mining activities in Virginia Township, outside Monrovia, has been warned to shut down, or else it would be closed through the law by the Environmental Agency (EPA).
In the wake of the treat, Montserrado County District #7 Representative, Bernard Benson (DJ Blue), has inquired the EPA to shut down the Chinese-owned sand mining company.
The company, LICHI, is operating in an area represented by Mr. Benson. He raised the concerns at the capitol, saying that activities of the company are causing serious destruction on the already dilapidated roads.
In a letter to EPA’s Executive Director, Rep. Benson suspected that LICHI’s mining has led to several other problems like erosion on the beach, heavy noise from the blast of the machines with dust and pollution.
These issues, Benson said have “negatively affected residents.”
He said while it is true that the job of the EPA includes protecting natural resources, they also have the legal power to stop such “harmful practices from the Chinese.”
“I have tried in the past to get the company to fix the problems, but their management has ignored my efforts. Because of this, I am now asking the EPA to take strong action by closing down LICHI’s operations,” Rep. Benson.
He believes this is the only way to protect the community and the environment.
