Transformation In Environmental Sector Promised By: Fiona Benson Kollie
As the issue of environmental sustainability being one of the key pillars of the Rescue Mission of the Boakai-led government, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo, has promised serious plans of action to transforming the environmental sector of the country, maintaining that environmental sustainability is key to Liberia’s sustaining its economic independence. He made the assertion recently in Monrovia when he was honored by the group under the banner Citizens United For Better Liberia as “Most Outstanding Executive Director & Humanitarian Of the Year” for his leadership and efforts in trying to put the EPA on par with other countries across the globe since his appointment at the EPA. Receiving the honor, Mr. Yarkpawolo said the issue of environmental sustainability is key, and it is one of the pillars of the Rescue Mission for sustainable development. According to him, he has decided to work harder in order to ensure that part of the ARREST Agenda be fulfilled, stressing that it is upon this backdrop the EPA under his leadership has designed a five- year work plan expected to be implemented within the time period. He maintained that the EPA is the environmental arm of the country; as such, there should be some level of transformation in the sector functions, stating that as President Boakai said “no business as usual” it is his reliance to do everything possible to put Liberia on par with other countries’ environmental sector to enable Liberia get her economic independence. The EPA head also told the gathering that his appointment at the EPA was never a mistake by President Boakai but it was meant to ensure that the sector be transformed. He, meanwhile, commended the group for the recognition and also urged other Liberians to do likewise, stating that it is good to give a man his flowers while he still alive. Presenting the honor, the Executive Director of the group, Kesseley Barzeh, said Mr. Yarkpawolo was not just ordinary but due to his continual contributions to society especially, the environmental sector of the country, he deserves the honor. To name a few, Mr. Barzeh said since the appointment of Mr. Yarkpawolo , there has been a united workforce, friendly working environment for all, the establishment of office space in four of the fifteen counties, the conduct of 1,463 compliant inspection and most of all, validating a board policy council that approved 11 policy and regulatory instruments thus including water quality regulation, soil quality regulation, solid waste management, among others, which he said needed recognition.
