A heart-wrenching fire early Tuesday morning, February 4, 2025, in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, claimed the life of an 8-month-old baby, Abraham Keita, after it completely engulfed a family home. The blaze, which broke out near Moon Light Entertainment Center, opposite Zwedru Central Parking, struck around 4 AM. By the time residents arrived at the scene three hours later, the house had already been reduced to ashes. Eyewitnesses described hearing desperate cries and screams from the vicinity, but the fire spread too quickly for any meaningful intervention. One resident recounted, “We woke up to the sound of people screaming, but the fire was already out of control. The house was destroyed before anyone could help.” Despite efforts from community members, the Liberia National Police, and the Motorcycle Union, no formal emergency services were present to manage the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with authorities launching an investigation into the incident. This tragic event has left the community in shock, with many residents expressing frustration over the lack of adequate fire safety measures in the area. The fire underscores the urgent need for a coordinated response to fire safety and better preparedness to prevent such devastating outcomes in the future. Local officials are now being urged to strengthen fire safety awareness programs, improve infrastructure, and ensure that emergency services are available and equipped to respond to such crises swiftly. This tragedy has become a rallying cry for change as the Zwedru community seeks to protect its residents from future disasters. The incident also highlights the broader concerns around fire incidents across Liberia, as the country continues to grapple with challenges related to fire prevention, response time, and public awareness. Authorities are expected to use this tragedy as a catalyst to push for improvements in both local and national fire safety protocols. By: D.
