A resident of Totota City, Madam Yamah Kermue, has called on the Totota City Corporation to launch a city-wide sanitation awareness campaign to address the growing concerns over waste disposal and cleanliness in the city.
Madam Kermue told In Profile Daily Newspaper in Totota that several communities, and public areas have remained dirty as the city continue to face sanitation challenges, which she attributed largely to improper waste disposal, and limited public education.
She expressed concern over garbage accumulated along streets, in market areas, and other public spaces.
She warned that the situation could pose health, and environmental risks to residents if not urgently addressed.
Madam Kermue: “The Totota City Corporation should educate residents about proper sanitation practices as they ensure waste is properly collected, and disposed.”
She recalled how, regular awareness campaigns could help residents better understand their responsibilities in maintaining clean surroundings, and encourage greater community participation in sanitation activities.
Madam Kermue emphasized the need for keeping Totota clean, and that such exercise should not be the responsibility of the City Corporation alone.
She called for public education through community meetings, radio programs, schools, and other platforms that could reach a wider segment of the population.
Poor sanitation remains a public health, and environmental concern, with inadequate waste management, and unsafe surroundings associated with increased risks of diseases, including diarrheal illnesses, and other sanitation-related infections.
Madam Kermue call also comes amid efforts by the health and environmental authorities to encourage communities to improve waste management; maintain clean surroundings, and practice proper hand hygiene.
Residents of Totota are being encouraged to avoid indiscriminate dumping of garbage, use designated waste disposal areas, and participate in community clean-up activities.
Madam Kermue has meanwhile, urged local authorities to work with community members to identify sanitation hotspots, and develop regular cleaning schedules that could maintain the city’s public spaces.
