Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. has written the Plenary of the Liberian Senate, bringing to its attention, difficulties confronting Liberian students studying in Morocco under the Government of Liberia’s bilateral scholarship program.
The communication read in Plenary on Tuesday March 11, 2025 indicates that on February 27, 2025, a resolution outlining the grievances of students was presented to the Ministry of Education demanding urgent national intervention.
According to the resolution, the students are experiencing severe hardships including :
Non-disbursement of financial allowances, absence of promised dormitory accommodations, unexpected financial burdens such as registration fees, resident permit costs and rental expenses which were not disclosed before their departure, as well as language barriers – a phenomenal which is said to be affecting the studentsβ economic progress and placing in dire conditions.
He explained that these challenges do not only hinder the students academic pursuits but also threaten their well-being and as such, prays the indulgence of plenary to engage with relevant organs of national government to ensure immediate relief as well as the establishment of a structural support system that would adequately address all financial needs and living conditions for current and future government scholarship recipients.
Meanwhile, the plenary of the Liberian Senate endorsed a motion by Senator Joseph Jallah to refer the matter to the Senateβs Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration as well as Foreign Affairs for further action. The committee is required to report its findings to the body within two weeks.
