Request for Parental Intervention in Liberia–Morocco Bilateral Scholarship Matter

Dear Parents,

The Liberian Student Association in Morocco extends its warm greetings to you, and hope that this message finds you in good health.

Every parent wants the good out of their children, and we as your children appreciate you for your continue prayers, and support in making sure that we receive the necessary education that we deserve as young people.

However, with a sad heart, we would like to inform you that many students, who are actively pursuing their studies have been abruptly removed from the scholarship program. This situation has traumatized a lot of students and has put them under psychological, emotional and financial pressure.

Majority of these students have been making tremendous academic progress, despite the challenges of studying in a foreign language, and adapting to a new environment. It has not been an easy journey, yet they have remained committed to their education.

we have sent several communications to the Ministry of Education and other relevant stakeholders; unfortunately, these efforts have not yielded any fruitful results.

As the leadership of the Liberian Student Association, we have deemed it necessary to reach out to you, our parents, to kindly request that you find time to meet with the Minister of Education and respectfully present our concerns to her.

Many of the students who have been removed from the scholarship are those who arrived in Morocco between 2021 – 2024.

It is Important to note that these students are actively enrolled into various universities across Morocco, and majority of them will be completing their studies in July of this year for those doing BSc, and July of next year for those doing MSc. These students were requested by the ministry of education to provide proof of enrollment (Inscriptions), which they all provided, yet they were cut off and asked to return home.

While majority of them have completed their initial programs, they were sent by the ministry to do, there are several reasons why they chose to continue their studies instead of abruptly returning home as being asked by the ministry.

These reasons are:

  1. Lack of Jobs for Graduates – while the ministry continues to say that they are going by the contract the students signed prior to them leaving Liberia, majority of the students who have returned home remains unemployed; a significant breach of the identical contract the ministry continues to emphasize that they are fallowing.
  2. 2. Lack of continue education program in Liberia- Majority of the students being asked to return home graduated with Associate degrees (AA’s) and are actively pursuing their BSc’s but they are being asked by the Ministry of education to abandon their studies and returned home.

Note: Liberia does not have a continuing education system in place, and many students risk having to start their university programs over, as this is the only means of meeting Liberia’s growing job market competition. This situation alone is leaving many students in a state of depression and bewilderment.

  1. Lack of specialized MSc Programs – The few students who decided to continue their MSc programs opted for this option because majority of them were given courses whereby their MSc programs are not currently in Liberia or is highly expensive. To address this issue, the past administration set a motion in place where students who finished their programs on time (3 years) were given the opportunity to do a MSc program. We kindly asked that you the parents plead with the minister to kindly give students the opportunity to learn as it has been our honest request.

On this note, we humbly appeal to you our dear parents to find a time and meet with the minister of education and present our case.

We are kindly asking an extension until July 2026 for BSc students, and July 2027 for MSc students. We are concentrated on our studies; unfortunately, this situation is having a negative impact on us, but we believe that your direct intervention will help change the situation for our good.

We sincerely appreciate your support and understanding.

Yours
