Poetic Trumpet

I keep myself busy while you’re sleeping,

I keep my mind open while you’re sleeping,

I keep myself writing while you’re sleeping,

I keep myself praying while you’re sleeping,

I keep myself reading while you’re sleeping,

I keep myself thinking while you’re sleeping.

 

While you’re sleeping, I’m writing my poems,

While you’re sleeping, I’m writing my proverbs,

While you’re sleeping, I’m thinking and thinking,

While you’re sleeping, I’m reading and reading,

While you’re sleeping, I’m praying and praying,

While you’re sleeping, I’m consulting history,

While you’re sleeping, I’m consulting my God,

While you’re sleeping, I’m raising my spiritual rod.

While you’re sleeping, I keep my eyes on my dogs,

While you’re sleeping, I converse with destiny,

While you’re sleeping, I’m thinking poetically,

While you’re sleeping, I’m writing politically,

While you’re sleeping, I’m thinking religiously,

While you’re sleeping, I’m consulting the future.

While you’re sleeping, I’m preparing for tomorrow,

While you’re sleeping, I’m learning from yesterday,

While you’re sleeping, I’m shaping today’s thoughts,

While you’re sleeping, I’m searching for wisdom,

While you’re sleeping, I’m sharpening my mind,

While you’re sleeping, I’m strengthening my spirit.

While you’re sleeping, I’m not wasting the night;

 

I’m turning quiet hours into words,

Turning thoughts into wisdom,

Turning prayers into strength,

Turning history into lessons,

And turning dreams into possibilities.

 

While you’re sleeping, I’m awake in thought;

While you’re sleeping, I’m awake in spirit;

While you’re sleeping, I’m awake in purpose—

Because the night may be dark,

But a determined mind

Can still see the light.
