A rift within the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) has come to the forefront as over 50 teachers.

The teachers have meanwhile, protested at the association’s headquarters. They expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of President Mary Nyumah.

The protest highlighted poor governance issues within the NTAL for which the aggrieved educators presented a 17-count resolution signed by more than 400 teachers against Madam Nyumah.

The resolution outlined demands to reform the association, and restore proper governance. Among their primary requests, is the reinstatement of national secretary-general, Samuel Johnson; a move they argue is justified by a ruling from the Labour Court.

The court decision has become a contentious point, underscoring the ongoing struggles within the NTAL leadership.

In addition to Johnson’s reinstatement, the protesting teachers called for the cancellation of the SAAR Insurance contract, which they claimed, has been mismanaged, and is not serving the best interests of individual members.

They also demanded a comprehensive audit of NTAL’s financial accounts, seeking transparency, and accountability from the leadership.

Cyrus Kortu, spokesman of the aggrieved teachers, over the weekend expressed the need for a financial audit.

“We urge all county chapter presidents to submit their financial reports. This will allow us to compare dues received from the national headquarters, and ensure that our finances are being handled responsibly.”

Kortu also called for the NTAL’s 67th national delegates convention to be scheduled in Montserrado County.

The teachers also argued that the prolonged court proceedings, and internal challenges have resulted in financial losses. It made it imperative for the convention to be held, and address some of the pressing issues.

The demonstration reflects growing discontent among teachers, who feel that the current leadership has failed to effectively represent their interests.

As the situation unfolds, the NTAL finds itself at a critical juncture, with the potential for significant changes in leadership, and organizational structure on the horizon.

As the protests continue, the NTAL leadership faces increasing pressure to respond to the demands of its members.
