The National Association of Public Defenders of Liberia (NAPDOL) will host its Seventh Annual Convention from today- Thursday to Friday, January 9-10, 2025, at the Banquet Hall, Ground Floor of the Temple of Justice Building, Capitol Hill in Monrovia. The program will be held under the Theme: The Role of Public Defenders in the Judicial System: Its Prospects and Challenges. In consonance with Article 23, Section 3, Sub-section One of the Constitution of the National Association of Public Defenders of Liberia (NAPDOL), the “Associations hold an Annual General Meeting once every year. Said Annual Meeting shall be held in the month of December every year; at such, every member shall be given at least two (2) weeks’ notice prior to the meeting.”  However, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of the current leadership the Annual General Meeting and/or Annual Convention in consultation with the Executive Council was duly deferred to January 9-10, 2025. Conversely, Article 17, Section 3 of the Constitution of NAPDOL inter alia provides that “the President of the Association in consultation with the Executive Council shall establish an Elections Commission to conduct election of officers of the Association. The Commission shall make election guidelines in consonance with the Constitution and By-laws of NAPDOL for the conduct of elections and declaration of winners shall be made on the same day upon close of voting. Based on the Elections Guidelines, the Commission officially received applications from interested applicants for various positions following a careful review of the applications. The Commission duly declared the following applicants eligible to contest in the elections slated for Friday, January 10, 2025: President: Cllr. Bestman D. Juah, Sr,Cllr. Jerome C. Pour, for the Vice President: Cllr. Sennay Carlos vs  George S. Dunor, for the Secretary-General: Alfre B. Holmes, no applicant for the Financial Secretary and Treasurer: Edwina D. Vakun. Meanwhile, the leadership of NAPDOL headed by Cllr. Tobey Joseph Raynes believes that the framers of the Constitution of NAPDOL intended that elections of officers should be done within the ambit of the said Constitution, that is, elections of officers shall be accordingly held every two (2) years.
