The Ministry of Local Government has officially inducted Nathaniel Toe Jr. as the new Superintendent of Maryland County, replacing Henry B. Cole who served since the inauguration of the Boakai-Koung administration in 2024.
The ceremony was held Monday, July 13, 2026 in Harper City and was attended by local government officials, members of the Maryland County Legislative Caucus, traditional and religious leaders, women and youth groups, civil society organizations, and residents.
Performing the induction, Deputy Minister for Administration Samuel Brown urged Superintendent Toe to provide visionary, accountable, and inclusive leadership that improves the lives of Marylanders and advances the government’s decentralization agenda.
Brown said that despite Liberia preparing to celebrate 180 years of independence, many essential government services remain concentrated in Monrovia.
This, he noted, forces citizens in rural counties to travel long distances and spend heavily to access documents such as driver’s licenses, passports, birth and marriage certificates, and health certificates. “The people of Maryland County deserve decentralization,” Brown declared. “It is time for Marylanders to access government services right here in their county instead of traveling to Monrovia.” He said the Boakai-Koung administration is committed to eliminating that burden through the establishment and strengthening of County Service Centers nationwide as part of its decentralization policy.
The Deputy Minister commended the Unity Party-led government for prioritizing the reform, describing it as key to improving governance, reducing administrative bottlenecks, and enhancing service delivery.
He also challenged Superintendent Toe to maintain close contact with communities by regularly visiting towns and villages to listen to citizens and explain government programs. He further called on residents to support the implementation of President Joseph NyumaBoakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
In his induction remarks, Superintendent Nathaniel Toe Jr. thanked President Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah KpanKoung for the trust placed in him.
He pledged to provide transparent, inclusive, and development-oriented leadership, and to work closely with local authorities, traditional leaders, women, youth, and development partners to accelerate progress across Maryland County.
